ICR/EUSR Pieter Feith met with Kosovo Women Leaders
on the occasion of the 8th Anniversary of UNSCR 1325
Pieter Feith, European Union Special Representative (EUSR)
invited Kosovo women representatives for an informal meeting on the
occasion of the 8th Anniversary of United Nations
Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on women, peace and
security.
In the course of the discussion on the current
political situation and the importance of the UNSCR 1325 for
Kosovo’s development the following statements were made:
ICR/EUSR Pieter Feith:
“Resolution 1325 leads the way in empowering female
decision-makers at all levels of the post-war reconstruction
process, including politics, humanitarian affairs and the economy.”
“I believe women leaders are uniquely equipped to
lead the transition from ethno-centric politics and mistrust to
democratic values and reconciliation. Greater representation of
women at the highest political levels is critical.”
Edita Tahiri, Member of the Kosovo Parliament, Chair
of Regional Women’s Lobby:
“Our vision for the future rests on having Kosovo a
land of democracy, economic prosperity and safe for all its
citizens. Kosovo aspires at Euro-Atlantic integration and full
integration in all other relevant institutions including the seat in
the UN.
Kosovo is committed to good neighborly relations and
constructive regional cooperation. We expect from the international
community, particularly from ICR/EUSR and EULEX to help the Kosovo
government and its people in building the state of rule of law and
consolidated sovereignty.”
Igballe Rogova, Program Director of Kosovo Women
Network:
“The Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo
stipulates that “civilian and democratic control over security
institutions shall be guaranteed.” In order for democratic control
and oversight to be effective,
women need to be involved from the outset directly in all
discussions and ongoing efforts pertaining to Security Sector
Reform, most importantly in the Kosovo Security Council.”
Pieter Feith took note of the concerns and requests
and extended his support for their work. It was concluded that
regular meetings with women representatives from all communities
shall be held in the future.
