26 May – EU Teach a day in secondary school ‘Arberia’ in Gjilan/Gnjilane

“You will be the ones deciding Kosovo’s future”

The EUSR representative Mattias Hallstrom gave today a lecture in secondary school Arberia in Gjilan/Gnjilane. Mattias Hallstrom started by stressing that it is important to meet with students as well and not only with government representatives as the EU is not only about decisions but mostly about helping people.

The history of the EU started right after the 2nd World War when people had a rough time. People wanted peace and a future with a perspective. The first basic principle of the European Union is that we need to work together for a better future. The European Union has now 27 member states which all have different culture, music, language and religion, but the system was made for them to cooperate. The EU is a mechanism which is always extending and the Western Balkans will be the next members.

Mattias Hallstrom continued by explaining the role of the different EU presences in Kosovo: the EUSR office, the EULEX rule of law mission and the European Commission Liaison Office, which all work to assist Kosovo in its European future.

After the lecture students had some questions about the difference between EU and Europe and what is the way to join the EU and other issues that are related to Kosovo’s integration into the EU. Mattias Hallstrom explained that the EU is just like a football club and that in order to be part of it you need to be prepared. One can’t say today how far or how close is Kosovo to become a member of the EU.
